 Things that Grow

We will be spending the next few weeks talking about 'things that grow' .  We will be exploring this topic using what is known as the 'project  based approach' to learning and teaching.  Several East Noble kindergarten and early childhood staff recently attended a weekend workshop about Project Based Learning .  The approach basically is based on the role of teacher as 'facilitator of learning' rather than 'teller of facts' (my explanation!) .  The activities included in each project are a direct result of student inquiry and questions.  In this way, students become responsible for their own learning, rather than the teacher directing their learning.  The task of the teacher, then is to structure the classroom activities in a way that allows students to investigate the topic and to discover the answers to their own questions.  The naturally inquisitive minds of young children are  a perfect match for this approach!  We began our Project on 'Things that Grow' by taking a walk outside to find both things that grow and things that do not grow.  Then we made a list of the things we found  and things we know ,that grow.  We divided that list into categories of plants and animals.  Then some questions arose when we didn't know if some things were plants or animals.  So we did further investigation.  Please follow our progress in this project by viewing the photos and documents that track our discoveries!
