Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson is perfect for lovers of pirates, magic, and adventure. It is suited for intermediate readers already introduced to chapter books. This is great for teaching readers how chapters can be used to change scenes and characters but time remains the same. There are parallel stories moving back and forth each chapter between Peter (before he becomes Peter Pan), his nemesis, Captain Stache(later to become know as Captain Hook), and occasionally other interesting charactersl!!
Readers hooked on this fantasy will be pleased to find this is a series they can latch onto!
Marty Mcguire by Kate Messner
Marty Mcguire is a third grade tom boy who constantly finds herself in predicaments that can possibly lead to disaster! This is a great book for readers moving into chapter books as each chapter builds on the next.
This text can be used for foreshadowing, building suspense(slowing down the action), character description, passage of time...

Dexter the Tough is a great book for a read aloud when beginning to work with students on following a character across a text and also inferring. Margaret Peterson Haddix doesn’t overload readers with too many characters, but allows readers to come to know and appreciate several chararcters well. Haddix provides details through what Dexter says, does, thinks and even what he writes, so readers can come to understand his motives. Is Dexter really a bully?
