 Nursing Events

On October 22, 2009, 3rd grade students from all East Noble Elementary Schools as well at St Johns Luthern school participated in a Focus on Health program at South Side Elementary School.

The Studends explored 5 stations under the direction of Pirate Pete (Mike Doyle, ENHS Sr), and his Crew Cory Apple (Nate Nash, ENHS Sr), Spot (Susan Parrish, ENHS Sr), Ben Bicuspid (Tony Moore, ENHS Sr) and Herbie Heart (Gabby Smith, ENHS Sr). Students were sent on an adventure to various locations in search for buried treasure. At the Heart Healthy station they learned about steps to promote a healthy heart by getting daily exercise, eating healthy, checking your blood pressure, not smoking and scheduling routine doctor visits. Luanne Haupt, RN and student nurses from IPFW were the presenters for this station. Carmen DeBruce, an RN at Luthern Children's hospital talked about how to keep your lungs healthy. She showed the students a jar of tar that was equivalent to how much tar would be built up in your lungs if you smoked for a year. She also talked about the 4,000 chemicals and poisons that are in one cigarette. She had a sample of a healthy pink pig lung and a black one that had been exposed to smoke. Rob Imber of the Kendallville YMCA manned the Get Fit station. the message was 5-2-1- almost none, enforcing that students should get 5 servings of Fruits and vegetables a day,  no more than 2 hours of screen time (TV and computers), at least one hour of physical activity a day, and consuming almost no sugary drinks. Student Nurses from Brown Mackie and IPFW taught the students on how to be Germ stoppers. The proper steps to handwasing were discussed asa way to prevent the spread of germs. They were also instructed on the proper brushing techinques for their Teeth. Students played a game of Simon Says with Janine Longfellow from the Purdue Extension Agency. The cool food station stressed the importance of eating 2 fruit servings (2 cups) and 3 vegetables servings (2 1/2 cups) every day. The last event of the day was a visit from Ronald McDonald. He talked to the children about what to do if they got lost, were approached by a stranger, or in a fire. Ronald McDonald also had the children laughing at his magic tricks and jokes. All those that participated had a fun eventful day learning about finding the treasure of Good Health.

 Nurse's News

Flu concerns:

It is that time of year again, where the flu is starting to spread. There is more concern this year with the spread of H1N1 and the seasonal flu. At this point, we have not seen an increase in illness in East Noble School corporation, however we are still taking precautions to protect our students and staff.

As school nurses we are continually reading and researching new information about this flu season, we are keeping in touch with the health department  to get additional advice and information from them, and we are closely working with Parkview' community educator and other area school nurses.

We recently sent home an information sheet to parents in the primary levels regarding our update from Dr Warrener about this flu season, and a letter to keep you informed on what to look for and do if your child were to get the flu.

Please click on the links to view those information sheets.

One thing we do wish to reiterate is to encourage good handwashing and flu prevention. Teach your students to wash their hands often, cough into their sleaves or a tissue, avoid sharing cups and utensils, and stay home if they are ill.

As always, please do not hesitate to call the school nurse if you are concerned or have questions.

New Immunization Requirements:

Please keep us up todate on immunizations your child recieves. Each student that enters school needs to have the required immunizations on file (for a complete list- see your school nurse). New this year, Kindergarten students that have not had the varicella vaccine will be required to submit a physician note stating they have had the disease. All other grades a parental history of the disease is acceptable.

For the 2010-2011 School year, we have been informed that all students entering grades 6th-12th will be required to have one meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) and one Tdap (tetanus, diptheria, and pertussis) booster after 10 years of age.  All students will also be required to have 2 doses of varicella vaccine unless they had the chicken pox.  If your child had the chicken pox, please send a note to your school nurse with the approximate month and year that they had the disease.

If your child will be effected by this new requirement, please make an effort to get them up-to-date on their vaccines prior to the start of the 2010-2011 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact your school nurse.

 Parents Please Take Note

Parents we want you to be aware of this release we recieved from the Indiana poison control center.

This is to make you aware of new tobacco products that are being test marketed in parts of Indiana and Ohio. These are smokeless tobacco products that appear to look like candy or breath mints and are even packaged as such. The poison control states not only is this a risk for our older students to get addicted to these tobacco products and authority not even be aware, but young children have the risk of being poisoned by these products when they mistake them for candy.
